Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, and the Cultural subjects. The Children are engaged in purposeful, unique hands-on activities and they are able to move freely throughout their environment to choose these materials. This freedom of movement is a cornerstone of the Montessori philosophy allowing for their physical development to thrive. Children need to move and their learning is effected by their ability to move freely while taking advantage of learning opportunities. Children experience several "sensitive periods" of development where by their need to acquire certain skills over others is exclusive. The acquisition of language is one of those needs and one that is fully nurtured in our Toddler environments. As their vocabulary progresses, they are able to ask for what they need and tell you how they feel. Language development allows children to problem solve more peacefully thus allowing them to feel autonomous. The goal, for all children, is to become independent learners resulting in being able to fulfill their own needs. With independence comes confidence and a thirst for further exploration.
